Theme #1 Survival requires Adaptation
One of the most important theme that continuously occur throughout the novel is survival requires adaptation. It simply means that you need to adapt to the environment you are in order to survive. I considered this as the most essential theme in the novel because the whole Hunger Games is all about surviving. The government forces the districts to give up their youth once a year to the Hunger Games. There can only be one winner in the Hunger Games, so the children are forced to kill each other until only one is left.
The quote that portrays the them survival requires adaptation is on page 110.
“Prim must know that in her heart. The competition will be far beyond my abilities. Kids from wealthier districts, where winning is a huge honor, who’ve been trained their whole lives for this. Boys who are two to three times my size. Girls who know twenty different ways to kill you with a knife” (Collins 110). This quote shows how you must adapt to the Hunger Games in order to survive. By describing the children who are participating the Hunger Games, she is warning Katniss that only way to survive is to adapt to the game.
Theme #2 Sacrifice
Sacrifice takes up a large section of the novel because its connected with another major theme, which is friendship. Since all the characters are close and friendly, the readers can discover that they sacrifice for each other. A big part of this section was dedicated to Katniss friend from District 11, Rue. Katniss admits that the girl reminds her sister and she becomes more interested in Rue.
The quote that portrays the theme sacrifice the most is on page 201. “Rue contributes a big handful of some sort of starchy root to the meal. Roasted over the fire, they have the sharp sweet taste of a parsnip” (Collins 281). Later as they become closer Katniss shares her medicine, food, and other supplies to Rue, a person that she was supposed to kill. In this passage they have a nice meal together, showing how much of a sacrifice Katniss is making for Rue.
